Food Desert or Oasis Lesson Plan

Enele Tua, our Samoan rugby player, in the debate kit asks students: What is the food environment like around you?

This is an acknowledgement of the importance of environment on the food choices we make. Food deserts are areas where people have limited access to affordable and nutritious, or fresh food. A Food Oasis is where there is plentiful choice.

This single session Lesson Plan sets your students the task of evaluating the food environment around your school.

The Learning outcomes are:

  • Consider what constitutes a balanced diet
  • Recognise the impact of diet on the way our bodies function
  • Report and present findings from enquiries, including conclusions
